Developed and published by Larian Studios, Baldur's Gate 3 was released in 2023 to the delight of fans around the world. Like past entries in the series, Baldur's Gate 3 is based on and borrows mechanics from Dungeons & Dragons, with players being dropped into the middle of the Forgotten Realms before embarking on an epic adventure to determine the future of their entire world.

At its outset, Baldur's Gate 3 sees the player and their party members narrowly escaping an interdimensional battle, only to find themselves infected by parasitic tadpoles that gradually transform their hosts into illithids, better known as mind flayers. From there, the player's search for a cure opens the door to a sprawling thriller full of monstrous beasts and impossible magic.

Upon its release, Baldur's Gate 3 was met with widespread acclaim from both critics and gamers alike. Baldur's Gate 3 was nominated for dozens of major industry awards, of which it won 44 in total, including the 2024 Hugo Award for Best Game or Interactive Work, Game of the Year at the 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, and the Labor of Love prize at the 2024 and 2025 Steam Awards.

While there is no question that the latest announcement is exciting, the upcoming Baldur's Gate 3 comic book series will be just the latest in a long line of Dungeons & Dragons titles from Dark Horse Comics. Over the past few months, Dark Horse Comics has published two of the most harrowing franchise titles of the decade, both of which offer a decidedly different kind of horror experience.

Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft by writer Amy Chu, artist Ariela Kristantina, and colorist Arif Prianto began in August and puts fan-favorite monster hunter Ez D'Avenir back in the spotlight for a trek through Dungeons & Dragons' darkest realm. Rather than focusing on a new villain, Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft sees Ez staring down a more esoteric threat, one which could destroy all of Ravenloft.

Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers by writer Christoper Hastings and artists Denis Medri and Dan Jackson has also honed in on the more horrifying corners of the world of Dungeons & Dragons, albeit in a less overtly terrifying fashion. Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers revolves around an unlikely anti-adventuring party of monsters who have their sights set on escaping both the dungeon they call home and the would-be heroes who see them as just another set of menaces to cut down.

To top things off, a new mainline Dungeons & Dragons comic book series by writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and artist Ibraim Roberson is set to begin in just a few weeks with the release of its first issue on November 4. The official solicit synopsis for Dungeons & Dragons #1 from Dark Horse Comics reads, "A draconic apocalypse approaches the Forgotten Realms, and it has one name on its lips: MORDENKAINEN. Now, stripped of his magic but never out of the fight, the most powerful wizard in all reality will need the help of Faerûn’s most legendary heroes to restore the balance."

Dark Horse Comics will reveal more information about the Baldur's Gate 3 comic soon.
