That unrelenting feeling of hope that Gyro inspires in Johnny is an unspoken gift, inspiring Johnny to persevere without the fear of failing. "That gives Johnny hope and purpose," Mills assessed when looking back at how Gyro and Johnny's bond transcends the simplicity of friendship. "Not to say he doesn't have purpose, but [Johnny] finds what he's passionate about again, and what revitalizes him. Gyro as a character represents that for Johnny, I think, in my personal opinion. They have this closeness that they get throughout their journey. They both have to be very open and raw with each other."
The Steel Ball Run anime will spend time digging into the intimate connection between Johnny and Gyro, retracing the masterful storylines that the manga has set in stone. "It's an incredible dynamic, really, and it shows a lot about Gyro's character," Mills added when looking ahead to what the anime has waiting for eager viewers. "There's so much I want to say about the stuff that we've done, and I just can't yet, and it's just so good. It's so incredible. I have to just emphasize over and over, I cannot get over how special this story is. Hope, I think, is just a defining factor and a thematic theme that sort of pushes Johnny along his journey."
Gyro's true self will be uncovered as the anime races deeper into the Steel Ball Run. "I'm very excited to really dive into that kind of silly part of Gyro Zeppeli... he has a very interesting family," Gyro's English voice actor noted. "His little silly bursts, I feel, have become his little art, his way of pulling himself away from that world, his little bits of defiance."
Steel Ball Run races back onto Netflix on September 25.
