Captain Marvel has been on a bit of a sabbatical lately, be it of her own accord or at the behest of Marvel. The absence is considerably strange, considering how much weight Marvel Studios threw behind presenting Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island, Fast X) into Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel, a long-awaited debut for the character coming tied to a full-length feature film in 2019.
That set the stage for her role in Avengers: Endgame, and with a grand entrance, no less, followed by what many view as a disappointing showing in 2023's The Marvels. In the three years after that forgettable venture, Captain Marvel was nowhere to be found in live-action form, but Marvel Comics is making sure she doesn't completely disappear with the premiere of Captain Marvel #1.
The ongoing comic series, written by G. Willow Wilson with art and promotional artwork by Rachael Stott, arrives in May 2027 and with a humbled version of Danvers who is forced to deal with the consequences of her decisions.
Captain Marvel Enters New Chapter in 2026

Per the official synopsis of Captain Marvel #1: "Following the cataclysmic events of Avengers: Armageddon, Carol Danvers finds herself grounded like never before. To rise again, Carol will have to challenge everything she thought she knew about being Captain Marvel—and break every rule along the way."
It continued: "And as she pushes herself further, a threat that has been quietly assembling in the shadows of the Marvel Universe for decades is finally ready to make its move."
Things got interesting for Danvers in Avengers: Armageddon, for sure, fueled largely by her decision to split The Avengers up (read: disbanding them) because, in her opinion, they were no longer needed as a group. The action was ill-conceived though, and Red Hulk made sure she'd regret it before she'd eventually join the faction led by Iron Man. It was all pure and utter chaos, and now she returns in the Captain Marvel series to sort through the shrapnel of her decisions to try and regain her footing.
Captain Marvel Fully Explained: Powers, Origins, Abilities and Secrets, Revealed
As Marvel Comics works to put the finishing touches on the standalone Captain Marvel series for 2027, the question still remains of when exactly Larson will reprise the role for Marvel Studios in the MCU. To this point, that remains undetermined, though there is headway toward her likely making a return in either Avengers: Doomsday in December 2027, or in Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2028.
The precise date of her return is being kept under tight wraps by all involved, which isn't exactly shocking when you consider how wildly non-forthcoming Marvel Studios has routinely been in revealing details about characters and projects when it's not ready to.
That means fans of Larson's Captain Marvel will have to continue waiting with bated breath to see which upcoming MCU film or series marks her official return, but Marvel Comics isn't leaving readers in the dark: the answer is Spring 2027.
