Star Wars Fan Fiction Movie Debuts With Higher RT Score Than Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars Fan Fiction Movie Debuts With Higher RT Score Than Rise of Skywalker
Critics are liking the new movie inspired by a galaxy far, far away a lot more than they did Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Fan fiction has done it again. The Love Hypothesis, which originated as Reylo fan fiction, earned a stronger Rotten Tomatoes score than the last Star Wars movie to feature Rey and Kylo, 2019's The Rise of Skywalker.

With The Love Hypothesis now streaming on Prime Video, the Rotten Tomatoes score for the romantic comedy has been revealed. With 26 reviews counted at the time of writing, The Love Hypothesis is "fresh" with an 81% critics' score. That's a good 30% higher than Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which sits "rotten" at 51%, based on 522 reviews.

The audience score for The Love Hypothesis is currently also at 81%. This marks a rare moment on the review aggregator website where critics and audiences are in agreement on a movie. Surprisingly, The Rise of Skywalker has the rom-com beat on the popcornmeter, with its audience score just slightly higher at 86%.

Most adaptations simply make the jump from page to screen. However, The Love Hypothesis did the inverse. Author Ali Hazelwood watched the Star Wars sequel trilogy and then wrote fan fiction about the "Reylo" ship between Daisy Ridley's Rey and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren that was originally published online in 2018 as Head Over Feet.

When Berkley Books decided to give the romance novel a physical publication, Hazelwood removed all the Star Wars connections and renamed the main characters, with the retitled The Love Hypothesis hitting bookshelves in 2021. A film adaptation was announced a year later, giving The Love Hypothesis a rare full-circle moment of going from screen to page to screen.

The reimagined The Love Hypothesis is a STEM fake-dating romance following Olive, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia. But when she realizes her best friend Ahn has fallen for her crush Jeremy, Olive impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen to prove she’s moved on.

This leads to a fake dating scenario with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement. When their arrangement begins to blur the lines between performance and reality, Olive is forced to test her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.

The Love Hypothesis Still Has a Hidden Reylo Connection Thanks to 1 of Its Stars

While its overt Star Wars connections were removed, the casting of Tom Bateman as one of the leads in The Love Hypothesis ended up adding back in a secret one. Many who press play on The Love Hypothesis will be unaware that in real life Bateman is married to Rey's actor Daisy Ridley.

In an interview with Extra TV on the Obsessed Fest red carpet in late June, Bateman addressed his connection to Star Wars as well as telling Ridley about the role. "When I mentioned it to her, it felt like such a small thing. Claire, our director, when she called up to offer, she said, 'Just so you know, there's a little connection here.' And I mentioned it to Daisy that evening, [...] and she said, 'Oh, I heard about that but I didn't think it was a big thing,'" he recalled.

Joining Bateman as co-lead of The Love Hypothesis is Lili Reinhart. Rachel Marsh, Jaboukie Young-White, Nicholas Duvernay, and Arty Froushan also star in the adaptation. Claire Scanlon directed the movie from a script by Sarah Rothschild.

The Love Hypothesis is now streaming on Prime Video.
