Shiny Pokémon have been around since Pokémon Gold and Silver, giving players a rare chance to encounter familiar creatures with completely different color palettes. While some shiny designs are barely noticeable, others completely transform their Pokémon into something that looks better, stranger, or simply more memorable than the original.

With hundreds of shiny Pokémon now available across the series, finding one, let alone narrowing down the best designs, is no easy task. From subtle changes that somehow work perfectly to wild color swaps that completely reinvent a Pokémon, these are the absolute greatest designs of them all.

A shiny Pokémon list wouldn’t be complete without Shiny Rayquaza. One of the most powerful Pokémon in the Pokémon universe, it’s unsurprising that its shiny form is easily one of the most iconic of all time. It was originally mass distributed on August 12, 2015, for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, and appeared in the 2015 movie Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages.

Its black body and gold accents accentuate the deity-like quality of Rayquaza, making the legendary Pokémon look even more imposing. Since Rayquaza is a Legendary Pokémon that descends from the sky, its jet-black coloration makes it resemble a massive rain cloud about to unleash its wrath upon the world below.

Furfrou is the gimmick Pokémon to end all gimmick Pokémon. With 10 trims in total, Furfrou doesn't get anything from them other than a different appearance: no abilities, no variations in stats, and no trim-specific moves. The only thing players remember about Furfrou besides its trims is its unique shiny form.

Furfrou's white fur turns black while its face turns white, creating a direct inverse of the original. Its nose also turns blue, and all of its trims receive the same color changes, with the only difference being the colors of the base form. It looks like a fur variation of a traditional standard poodle. Even with this unique shiny, Furfrou remains a fairly forgettable Pokémon outside its gimmick, but at least it's chic.

Dubwool is a common Pokémon from Pokémon Sword and Shield, but it has a truly fantastic shiny form. While many shinies simply invert their colors, turning Dubwool from a white sheep with black accents into a black sheep with white accents emphasizes its namesake nature. The extra gray from its original form also gives the darker wool a more imposing presence.

The darker wool makes Dubwool’s horns and face stand out while keeping its design recognizable. The contrast between its dark wool, gray body, and white accents makes the shiny feel both familiar and completely different, making it the black sheep among darker-colored shinies.

Chandelure already looks like something that wandered out of a haunted mansion, but its shiny form makes its flames even more striking. Shiny Chandelure takes the ghostly colors of its original form and gives them a warmer aesthetic, as if it were trying to be a kind, guiding light rather than an ominous one. The result is a surprisingly welcoming flame that still retains Chandelure’s eerie qualities.

Its normally purple body becomes deep orange, while its blue flames turn purple, creating an unusual contrast. With its spectral fire glowing against its dark body, Shiny Chandelure looks like a flame that could keep burning long after the rest of the world has gone completely dark.

Clodsire’s colors are perfect, with its muddy look emphasizing its Ground typing and making it the best swampy friend anyone could have before they get poisoned. That’s where Shiny Clodsire comes in, as its purple coloration signals its Poison typing while also reflecting a real-world warning sign called aposematism. Bright colors in animals can warn predators that they are toxic, venomous, or simply taste terrible.

Sylveon is already one of the prettiest Pokémon to come out of the Kalos region, and one of the best-designed the Eeveelutions. However, Shiny Sylveon takes it one step beyond, going from a predominantly pink pretty ribbon dancer to a predominantly blue Pokémon with pink accents. The pink eyes do a lot to make Shiny Sylveon quite a bit different from its blue-eyed form.

Because its primary white color stays consistent between both forms, Shiny Sylveon almost resembles more of a rabbit, ferret, or mouse with pink eyes, abandoning the consistent fox, cat, or dog characterization seen throughout the other Eeveelutions.

The change is especially effective because Sylveon’s design is built around soft colors and flowing shapes. It is a relatively simple color swap, but Shiny Sylveon proves that sometimes a small change is all a great design needs to be made even better.

Ribombee is the manifestation of the perfect spring Pokémon. Its original base colors of yellow, white, and the brown scarf make it look like it came straight off a runway for the spring season. That’s why Shiny Ribombee is so very interesting, keeping up the spring feeling with its pink coloring at first, but darkening it with more muted colors that make Ribombee look like it’s dressed more for fall than for spring.

On an interesting note, when it comes to real-world animals, Ribombee is a parallel to fairy-like bumblebees or honeybees. However, its shiny form more closely resembles a Red Mason Bee, which has a darker reddish-brown coloration. It’s a fitting comparison for a Pokémon whose shiny form feels like it traded its spring wardrobe for something more suited to autumn.

It lightens Clefable’s already pink exterior to a softer pink, but what really stands out are its green ears.

What makes the green ears such a funny inclusion is twofold. The first, and more obvious, is the “little green men” stereotype of extraterrestrials that gained popularity in the 1950s after a 1955 UFO encounter in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was misquoted as involving green aliens rather than silver ones.

The other connection is more directly related to space, as Uranus appears pale green because of methane in its atmosphere, while supernova remnants like Cassiopeia A can also display green hues. This makes Shiny Clefable’s colors feel appropriate for a Pokémon from the stars.

Aurorus is one of the most elegantly designed Pokémon ever. Its coloration helps the player visualize the prehistoric tundra it must have walked through millennia ago. Its shiny makes an interesting case for either a mild color variation that could occur in the wild or a divergent evolutionary path, imagining two sauropod dinosaurs with the same common ancestors, but different coloration suited to different environments.

While base Aurorus has a deep blue body with light blue accents, Shiny Aurorus has a pure white body with darker blue accents. Could the two have been similar animals that evolved differently to survive in separate environments, with the shiny form better suited to denser snowdrifts while the original form lived closer to open water and icebergs? The blue rings give Shiny Umbreon a cooler, almost moonlit quality compared to its original gold accents. With the overall coloration being closer to early evening. Both Shiny Ninetales forms give the kitsune a much more sinister look than their seemingly calm counterparts. However, Shiny Alolan Ninetales edges out its original counterpart with its lavender coloration, adding a darker accent to its already icy nature.
