In an Oct. 15 Twitter post, The Batman Part II filmmaker Matt Reeves addressed his recent decision to step back from the production in its final weeks of principal photography. "Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II," Reeves clarified. "I am profoundly grateful to Steven [Soderbergh] for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes."
What Happened to Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II
Reeves' statements come less than two weeks after production on The Batman Part II halted when the filmmaker stepped back to attend to a personal matter. In a statement released that same day, DC Studios wrote, "Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon."
On Oct. 15, it was confirmed that Ocean's Eleven and Magic Mike director Steven Soderbergh had signed on to cover for Reeves during the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II. DC Studios released a statement explaining that "Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt's work, approached Matt and will step in to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film."
Why Steven Soderbergh Is the Right Choice to Finish The Batman Part II
Soderbergh himself said in his own statement, "I thought Matt Reeves' work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film."
Soderbergh, in addition to being a foundational part of the independent movie scene of the late '80s and early '90s, has been behind some of the biggest breakout hits of the past two decades. The Ocean's Eleven trilogy raked in more than $1.089 billion and established Soderbergh as a master of fast-paced, subversive action set pieces.
While Soderbergh will direct the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II in Reeves' stead, he will be involved beyond that. Instead, Reeves is slated to return to the project for post-production as soon as he becomes available, while The Batman Part II itself is still intended to be released in Feb. 2028.
The Batman Part II is currently slated to arrive in theaters on Feb. 18, 2028. The Batman is streaming on HBO Max.
