6 New Sci-Fi Anime From 2026 You Need to Watch Right Now

6 New Sci-Fi Anime From 2026 You Need to Watch Right Now
The sci-fi anime lineup of 2026 has plenty to offer. These six new series deserve a spot on every science fiction fan's watchlist.

Science fiction has quietly become one of anime’s strongest genres in 2026. The year has delivered everything from a frozen post-apocalyptic Earth and parallel universes to cybernetic crime and speculative biology. There has been no single dominant flavor of sci-fi, which has made the genre unusually exciting to follow. Several of the year’s standouts have also avoided treating science fiction as little more than an excuse for futuristic weapons.

Technology, evolution and artificial intelligence are being used to ask larger questions about identity and progress. With the Fall 2026 season now underway, that lineup is still growing. Established franchises have received bold new interpretations, and completely new adventures are sending viewers everywhere from ruined Earth to deep space. These anime represent the strongest new sci-fi experiences 2026 has delivered so far.

1 The Darwin Incident Uses Science Fiction to Ask Who Counts as Human

The Darwin Incident is not interested in futuristic spectacle, and that is exactly what makes it stand out. Charlie is a human-chimpanzee hybrid commonly called a “Humanzee,” born through biological experimentation. He possesses human intelligence and extraordinary physical strength, and the world refuses to let his existence remain ordinary.

Charlie becomes entangled with the Animal Liberation Alliance, an extremist organization. Their ideology places him directly inside arguments surrounding animal rights, experimentation and humanity’s relationship with other species. The anime’s speculative science works because Charlie never feels like a gimmick.

His existence forces practically everyone around him to reveal what they believe separates a human from an animal in the first place. Is it intelligence, genetics, or social recognition? There are action sequences, but The Darwin Incident works best when nobody is fighting. Charlie simply existing creates enough conflict.

2 PSYREN Finally Brings a Cult Shonen Sci-Fi Story to Anime

media_22203

In PSYREN, Ageha Yoshina discovers a mysterious red telephone card connected to a string of unexplained disappearances. When his childhood friend Sakurako Amamiya vanishes after obtaining the same kind of card, Ageha investigates the organization known as Psyren. That decision pulls him into a deadly game.

The supernatural abilities give the anime plenty of battle-shonen energy, but its mystery is what pushes it firmly toward science fiction. Ageha is not merely entering another arena filled with opponents. He is trying to understand what happened to the world around him and why the truth appears connected to something much larger than a simple kidnapping.

The series has only just begun, but the premise already feels refreshingly different from most modern Jump adaptations. Some manga finally get their anime adaptation years later than they should have. PSYREN feels like it has been waiting for this exact moment to be animated.

3 Thunder 3 Is One of 2026's Strangest Sci-Fi Adventures

Pyontaro, Tsubame and Hiroshi do not look like conventional action heroes. Thunder 3 follows the three middle schoolers, collectively nicknamed the Small 3, as they discover a mysterious disc capable of connecting their world to another universe. Pyontaro’s little sister, Futaba, is kidnapped by aliens and taken through the disk, and the boys follow.

What they discover is one of the strangest parallel worlds anime has produced in years. Their own cartoonish designs remain intact while the universe surrounding them becomes dramatically more realistic. This creates a visual collision between two completely different approaches to animation. The contrast is not merely decorative.

Inside the alternate universe, the Small 3 possess physical capabilities they never had at home. Aliens and enormous technological threats have also transformed this other Earth into somewhere genuinely dangerous. While the multiversal adventure is exciting, Pyontaro’s search for his sister is the goal. That emotional objective keeps the weirdness grounded.

4 Patlabor EZY Proves Old-School Mecha Still Have Something to Say

media_22205

Patlabor EZY moves the franchise into the 2030s, where artificial intelligence and automation have advanced enough that piloted Labors are beginning to look outdated. The Second Special Vehicles Section continues using an upgraded AV-98 Ingram while dealing with a new generation of technology-related crime.

The Patlabor franchise has never been primarily interested in giant robots being cool simply because they are giant robots. Labors are machinery and they require maintenance. The machines can also become outdated because technology changes society whether the people operating them are ready or not.

Instead of trying to compete with modern mecha anime through enormous battles, Patlabor EZY returns to the police-procedural personality that made Patlabor great in the first place. Watching a supposedly obsolete machine navigate an increasingly automated world feels appropriately ironic. The robots may be aging, but the ideas surrounding them are not.

5 Snowball Earth Has Everything a Great Sci-Fi Adventure Needs

media_22206

Years ago, Tetsuo fought alongside his giant robot companion Yukio against monstrous threats from space. Their final battle ends disastrously, leaving Tetsuo drifting in an escape pod. After years in cold sleep, he finally reaches Earth and the planet is frozen.

In Snowball Earth, Civilization has collapsed, and understanding what happened is almost as important as surviving what remains. The ingredients of this story sound deliberately old-school. There are giant robots and monsters. There is also a ruined Earth and a young hero carrying the emotional weight of someone he could not save.

The execution keeps those familiar elements fresh. Tetsuo’s isolation matters to the story as much as the spectacle. The frozen landscapes help enormously. Snow and ice turn familiar civilization into something alien, allowing the anime to make Earth itself feel like the mysterious planet Tetsuo needs to explore. Snowball Earth delivers the year’s most complete old-fashioned adventure.

6 The Ghost in the Shell Is the Essential Cyberpunk Anime of 2026

media_22207

Ghost in the Shell hardly needed another anime to prove its importance, but Science SARU found a reason to make one anyway. THE GHOST IN THE SHELL follows Major Motoko Kusanagi once again in a world where the distinction between a human being and technology has become difficult to define.

Cybernetic bodies are normal, and brains can connect directly to networks. Those ideas are hardly new anymore, but that is precisely why this adaptation is so interesting. Technology in 2026 has moved much closer to some of the questions Ghost in the Shell began asking decades ago.

Artificial intelligence, digital identity and the ownership of personal data no longer feel like remote cyberpunk speculation. Ghost in the Shell carries enough history that almost any new version will be compared with masterpieces. The 2026 series uses that history to its advantage instead of trying to escape it.
