In 2024, Sydney Sweeney starred in several unsuccessful releases, but ended the year strong with her best-ever release: The Housemaid. The movie was a major hit in theaters, on PVOD, and later on streaming.
The Housemaid premiered in theaters on Dec. 19, 2025, before heading to digital platforms on Feb. 13. It later obliterated the competition for over 100 days before heading to Starz on Apr. 1, where it broke the streamer's all-time record for best-performing Pay 1 film. Now, The Housemaid is heading to HBO Max, as the streamer has confirmed the R-rated thriller will debut on Oct. 9.

HBO Max has even more releases for Sydney Sweeney fans. Aside from being Euphoria's home, which wrapped this year after three seasons, in October, the streamer will also add Anyone But You, the fake-dating Much Ado About Nothing-based rom-com also starring Glen Powell.
The Housemaid Was a Resounding Success
The Housemaid adapts Freida McFadden's novel of the same name, which sees Millie, a convicted felon, trying to restart her life. She does so by accepting a live-in maid position after she meets Nina Winchester. As she starts her job, she begins developing feelings for her employer's husband, but it turns out nothing is as expected.
The Housemaid received positive reviews from critics, holding a Certified Fresh 74% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes out of 201 reviews, and an even higher 92% Verified Hot from the audience, who praised the accurate adaptation of the novel, as well as the twists.
The film was a massive success, grossing $400.5 million worldwide against a $35 million budget.
The Housemaid's Story Continues
Following the resounding success of the R-rated thriller, Lionsgate didn't waste any time in confirming a sequel. Luckily for fans, Freida McFadden also wrote two more sequels, including The Housemaid's Secret, which will be adapted next. The sequel is set to premiere in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027, two years after the first film.
The Housemaid's Secret sees Millie take a new job working for a wealthy but sick woman, who is looking for a way to escape her abusive husband, Douglas Garrick. The book description notes, "I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe. Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go."
Sydney Sweeney will return as Millie Calloway, with Michele Morrone reprising his role as Enzo. Paul Feig is also back to direct and produce. Meanwhile, several new faces are joining the franchise, including Kirsten Dunst as Wendy Garrick, Paul Anthony Kelly as Douglas Garrick, as well as Off Campus' Stephen Kalyn and Brittany Snow. Production is expected to kick off later this year. At the same time, The Housemaid expands into a stage play as well.
The Housemaid is streaming on Starz, and will be available on HBO Max on Oct. 9.
