The latest big action movie of the year has been scooped up by Sony following its impressive debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film's acquisition comes after it was given universal praise in its early reviews, amid comparisons to the John Wick movies.
Per THR, Sony picked up the distribution rights to The Surgeon after a competitive bidding situation. The rights include North America, Latin America, Italy, China, and Hong Kong. A wide release date has not yet been set. The Surgeon had already been generating some buzz ahead of its world premiere at TIFF. After its debut, it was rated at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a positive review from every approved critic.

"During The Surgeon, the entire theater roared, screamed, and gasped in unison. I've never seen anything like it, and I loved it to bits," a Region Free review stated about the movie, giving it a perfect score.
"This medical thrill ride holds nothing back in exploring the human anatomy as weaponry that even John Wick would envy. Maybe we should call this one John Sick?" Deadline's review reads.
THR's review added, "A genre-bending swirl that is part The Pitt (but gorier), part tense crime thriller, part action movie and part midnight movie, all infused with witty touches. It is wildly entertaining."

Michelle Yeoh Takes on Her Most Dangerous Role Yet
The Surgeon stars Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as a retired surgeon who is kidnapped by a criminal gang and forced to perform surgery on a mystery patient. To escape, she falls upon her extensive knowledge of human anatomy in order to dispatch her kidnappers with "anatomical precision." It's not the same as utilizing good old-fashioned firepower, but we can presume John Wick himself would be proud.
Roshan Sethi (A Nice Indian Boy), a real-life doctor, wrote and directed The Surgeon. Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who also produce the John Wick movies, served as producers on this film as well, alongside Diarmid McGrath. Other producers include Tim Headington, Lia Buman, Neil Shah, Steve Klinsky, Adam Kolbrenner, John Schoenfelder, and Russell Ackerman.
In addition to Yeoh in the lead, The Surgeon also stars Martin Freeman (The Hobbit trilogy), Laurie Davidson (The Road Trip), Yuri Kolokolnikov (Game of Thrones), and Joseph Mydell (The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry).
The Surgeon does not yet have a wide release date.
